1 December 2023

Dear CEPCEB Members,

Please note we have extended the deadline for the nominations to December 4, 2023, 5 pm.

In preparation for the 21th Annual Center for Plant Cell Biology (CEPCEB) Distinguished Noel T. Keen Lecture and Awards Ceremony on Friday, December 8, 2023, we are soliciting nominations by December 4, 2023, 5 pm.

These prestigious awards have a monetary value, and awardees' names are posted on the CEPCEB website. Don’t miss this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of your deserving lab members and a faculty or non-faculty member of our community.

* 2023 CEPCEB Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow Research Award

* 2023 Bailey Farms Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award

* 2023 Neil Campbell Outstanding Undergraduate Research Fellowship

* 2023 IIGB Natasha V. Raikhel Award in Research Innovation and Science Leadership

Nomination Procedures:

The Postdoctoral and Graduate Student Awards seek to recognize a UCR postdoctoral fellow and graduate student who have achieved research excellence, as demonstrated by publication of an impactful paper in the past two years. These papers are to be within the broad mission of CEPCEB, bridging from basic scientific discovery to impact. Manuscripts that are in press are also acceptable if a letter of acceptance is included with the manuscript, in the nomination package. The departmental or degree program affiliation of the awardee is not relevant. However, the nominee needs to have been mentored by a CEPCEB faculty member. If you have multiple candidates for one award from your lab, it is fine to submit multiple nominations.

Because of the breadth of CEPCEB research interests, the letters of nomination should address:(1) importance of these scientific findings to the field, (2) specific role of the student/postdoc in the research (this is particularly important in multi-author papers), (3) prominence of the journal/proceedings that the work is published in, and (4) any other information that might guide the award committee’s decision-making process.

The Neil Campbell CEPCEB Outstanding Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award (started as an annual Award in 2005) honors UCR undergraduates mentored by CEPCEB faculty. The criteria for this award are not as stringent as those for the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Awards: creativity, diligence, focus, enthusiasm, and tangible research accomplishments are primary considerations for this award. The letter of nomination for this award should address: (1) the importance of these scientific findings to the field, (2) the specific role of the undergraduate in the research project (this is particularly important since most undergrads are mentored by a graduate student, postdoc, or staff member), (3) independence of the student, and (4) any other information that might guide the award committee's decision-making process. If the student has been an author on a manuscript, the manuscript should be submitted; however, authorship on a manuscript is not mandatory for this award. Nominees must be current students who will be at UCR through winter quarter so that they can receive the fund through Financial Aid. If their education costs are paid for in another way, they will still receive the financial benefit, which will be around $5000.

CEPCEB Award nominations are to be submitted by December 4, 2023, 5 pm to Bernadette Gilbert (bernadette.gilbert at ucr.edu). Please direct general questions to CEPCEB Director Julia Bailey-Serres.

Awardees will be recognized on Friday, December 8th at 3:30 in the Genomics Auditorium. There will be additional talks and recognitions prior to the awards ceremony, including a lecture by Michael Purugganan from New York University. More program details will be shared soon.

Best wishes,

Dr. Julia Bailey-Serres
