Greetings,
I am passing on a request from local conservation managers for volunteers
to help monitor (and prevent) fish strandings in the Santa Ana River, Oct
21st 8am-2pm.
As many of you may know, the Santa Ana River near downtown Riverside hosts
a species of fish listed as "Threatened" under the federal Endangered
Species Act (as well as other native species of conservation concern).
Next Wednesday, Oct 21st, the Rapid Infiltration and Extraction (RIX)
wastewater treatment facility will be shutting down for maintenance. This
shutdown will deprive the Santa Ana River of a large amount of baseflow,
leading to potential fish strandings.
Conservation managers, led by folks at the Riverside-Corona Resource
Conservation District, are asking for volunteers to monitor parts of the
river and prevent native fish from stranding. The work is pretty
straightforward (put stranded fish in buckets) and no special skills are
required.
If you are interested and able to help, please reach out to me so I can
pass your names along. I and some members of my lab will be there.
Sincerely,
Kurt
