<strong>Details:</strong> This event will build on the 2022 retreat at UCLA's Lake Arrowhead Lodge and related webinars. If you're working outdoors or heading to a region with high temperatures, make sure your team has completed heat illness prevention training, is discussing precautions including access to water and shade, checking in on each other regularly, and has emergency plans in place. Documentation is important; multiple field departments have been asked to produce heat illness training records by Cal/OSHA this summer. Training is available online in the UC Learning Center by searching "heat" or you may contact your campus EH&S office for guidance. In September I led a field safety workshop at the Hopland Research & Extension Center as part of orientation for this year's cohort of GrizzlyCorps, and asked their Director Eliza Munger to share more details about this unique program:<br>
<strong>What is GrizzlyCorps? </strong>GrizzlyCorps is an AmeriCorps program designed by Project Climate at UC Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment in partnership with California Volunteers. Our program sends recent college graduates into rural communities across California to promote regenerative agri-food systems and fire and forest resilience.<br>
<strong>What motivates you, and how do you see GrizzlyCorps having a unique impact in California? </strong>GrizzlyCorps is an incredible network of talented young professionals and dedicated rural community partners. The excitement, passion and energy our fellows have is a wonderful motivator to continue to make this program a success. In just three years of the program operating, we have seen the impact on community resilience and climate action in California thanks to the service of our fellows. Each year, over thirty percent of our fellows stay in their communities to work for their host sites after their fellowship year and the majority of the rest stays working in natural resources in California. It is deeply rewarding to see the professional growth and development of our alumni and continue to have multi-year relationships with our host site partners. </p>

My mom's side of the family is from Weaverville and we spent many summers horsepacking and backpacking in the Trinity Alps. I still try to go on at least one backpacking trip a year up there. <br>
<strong>A lesson learned in the field? </strong>Early on in my outdoor education career, I felt compelled to follow the direction of those who had more years of experience or were in positions of leadership, even if that advice went against my own training or intuition. On one remote wilderness trip I led, following this direction nearly put myself and some of our students in danger. Since then, I trust my training, expertise and intuition. Learning to advocate for myself and have confidence in my knowledge was not only important to me but for everyone I have led outdoors. I always encourage folks to defer to their comfort level of safety and feel comfortable discussing safety concerns in and out of the field.<br>
