*Special Seminar Announcement: Ecological Network Analysis*

Dear Colleagues,

We are honored to host Dr. Brian Fath for a special seminar on Wednesday,
April 22. In addition to his scheduled appearance at the Botany and Plant
Sciences Seminar, Dr. Fath has graciously agreed to give a specialized
lecture focusing on ecological network analysis. You are cordially invited
to attend this session.

*Seminar Details*

● *Title:* Ecological Network Analysis: An Overview

● *Time:* Wednesday, April 22 | 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

● *Location:* Batchelor Hall, Room 2158
*------------------------------*

*Abstract*

Networks are ubiquitous. In ecology, network methods are essential for
studying energy and nutrient flow within food webs. This lecture provides
an overview of Network Environ Analysis (NEA), a systems theory of the
environment initiated by Prof. Bernie Patten.

Over nearly 50 years of development, NEA has provided the tools necessary
to assess the structure (topology) and function (weighted digraphs) of
ecological networks. This approach reveals rich, complex path structures
and highlights the importance of indirect flows (network nonlocality),
cycling (Finn Cycling Index), and beneficial relations (network mutualism).
Current research applies these methods to socio-ecological systems to
better understand their resilience and sustainability through fundamental
ecological principles.

*About the Speaker*

*Brian D. Fath* is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at
Towson University, Maryland, and a Principal Research Scholar at the
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg,
Austria.

A world-renowned expert in systems ecology, Professor Fath has taught
ecological modeling and networks across more than a dozen countries. He has
held Fulbright Distinguished Chair positions in both Italy and the Czech
Republic and was the 2016 recipient of the Prigogine Medal for outstanding
work in systems ecology.

His extensive scholarship includes over 200 research papers and several
foundational books, including *A New Ecology: Systems Perspective* and
*Foundations
for Sustainability*. He also serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the
*Encyclopedia
of Ecology* and *Frontiers in Sustainable Resource Management*. He is the
past chief editor of the journal, *Ecological Modelling*.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Best regards,

Larry
