Hi everyone,

This summer, Dr. Loralee Larios, Assistant Professor in Botany and Plant
Sciences, is working with STEP, a non-profit organization, to plan STEM
summer learning labs <https://www.stepconference.org/STEM_hybrid.cfm>.
These STEM learning labs provide 8th and 9th graders from the inland empire
and adjacent desert school districts opportunities to explore a local
community topic and how STEM can be used to identify solutions for an
issue.


We are looking for student mentors during the last 2 weeks of the
program. The first week we are looking for volunteer mentors is the week of
July 18-22. The program is being held at Cal Baptist University, Magnolia
Police Station, and the Riverside Fire Training Center. The final week of
the program, July 25-29th, will be held at UCR and Bourns Technology
Center.


Below you will find a detailed schedule for volunteer mentors with
addresses and times for each location and day. We are looking for 8-10
students to volunteer for a portion of each day for a minimum of one week (i.e.
the time slots in red on the attached schedule). While the same students
returning each day is ideal so that there is consistent mentorship, it is
not required.


The organization students belong to will be awarded $500 for 4 students
from the same group for volunteering 10 hours each week. $250 will be
awarded for 2 students. Groups do not need to participate in both weeks to
receive awards. This would be a great fundraising opportunity while doing
some volunteer work.
