Subject: RE: 4 Post doc positions available - climate adaptive forestry

Greetings,

We are pleased to announce 4 upcoming postdocs positions associated with climate-adaptive reforestation. They focus on the process of collecting viable conifer seed crops and optimizing seed lot use to increase growth rates and provide climate change-anticipating guidance for planting at the site level. This email provides a brief description of the positions. The attached file has the details for the first position. Please forward as appropriate!

The first postdoc is available now, for 18 months, extension possible with additional funding. Titled “Using Landscape, Climate and Environmental Risk Factors to Identify Priority Seed Collection Areas Across California”, the objective of this research is to develop location maps of at-risk, but potentially critical conifer stands that may already be somewhat adapted to higher temperatures. It focuses on the vulnerabilities of the conifer seed supply that are essential for reforestation. Climate change, wildfire, supply chain links and other factors are affecting conifer forests and climate-adaptive reforestation efforts, and these vulnerabilities represent an emerging threat to needed seed supplies.

The postdoc will compile various lines of evidence regarding the current condition of conifer seed inventories in California, spatially model risks to conifer stands, develop a tool for prioritizing areas to search for cone crops, and help create a framework for tracking progress in locating and securing seed. The project will quantify landscape risks to seed sources using landscape units already in use for reforestation planning and activities in California. The results will support California’s reforestation goals to increase the pace and scale of conservation, restoration and management. The second postoc will be available thru UC Davis shortly. It is an 18-month postdoctoral scholar position in assisted migration of forests, with an extension contingent on additional funding. The postdoc will munge and analyze large common-garden and forest-inventory datasets, contribute to the development of the Climate-Adapted Seed Tool<https://stewartecology.org/ClimateAdaptedSeedTool/> and related publications, and potentially contribute to related forest management projects. Contact JoeStewart at ucdavis.edu<mailto:JoeStewart at ucdavis.edu> to express interest in the position.

Two more postdocs will shortly be available through the US Forest Service, located in California and Washington states. These are 1-year postdocal ORISE Fellowships, with the possibility of extension for up to three years. The California position is located at the USDA- FS, Pacific Southwest Research Station, Davis, CA. Postdocs will help organize and coordinate a large multi-state project looking at assisted migration and different silvicultural approaches in a post-fire reforestation landscape. Opportunities will be available for other side projects to ensure a good publication record while the large project comes online. Contact Dr. Jessica Wright to express interest in this position: jessica.w.wright at usda.gov<mailto:jessica.w.wright at usda.gov>.
