*UC Field Research Safety*
Greetings, I hope you are all well. I was honored to participate in *Cornell
University's Safer Science* panel discussion last week regarding identity
prejudice in the field. If you weren't able to listen directly, I've shared
some related publications and links below. Our *UC Fieldwork Toolkit
Leadership Training Series* is starting next week on March 3; registration
is full, but materials and recordings will be posted for all here
<https://ucop.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=435d242eb85b68919be297700&id=52f673c56d&e=6cd443c932>.
Also, I'm sharing below a few* project* and *weather-related news stories*
from around the state...but a shorter month, means a shorter newsletter! As
always, feel free to contact me directly at sarasouza at berkeley.edu with any
questions or suggestions. Thanks, Sara

*Safer Science: Strategies to protect at-risk researchers when conducting
fieldwork*

As a result of identity prejudice, certain individuals are more vulnerable
to conflict and violence when they are performing scientific work in the
field.

A huge thank you to Amelia-Juliette Demery and Monique Pipkin of Cornell
University for presenting their *Nature Ecology and Evolution* paper
titled, “Safe fieldwork strategies for at-risk individuals, their
supervisors and their institutions

Last, for those of you that venture off groomed trails, this podcast
episode explores our relationship to the hazards of avalanches, and
chronicles a miraculous survival story and asks what we ultimately learn
when we make it through worst-case scenarios (Outside

That's all for this month. But borrowing a term from NASA, keep your
"hazcams" on and take care out there. Best, Sara

Photo: This is the first high-resolution, color image to be sent back by
the Hazard Cameras (Hazcams) on the underside of NASA’s Perseverance Mars
rover after its landing on Feb. 18, 2021. [This imagery safeguards against
the rover getting lost or inadvertently crashing into unexpected obstacles,
and works in tandem with software that allows the rover to make its own
safety choices and to "think on its own." NASA
