<p style="line-height:125%;margin:10px 0;padding:0;color:#757575;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:16px;text-align:left"><span style="font-size:15px"><span style="color:#000000"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif">New initiatives in the digitization of herbarium specimens and scientific archives have given rise to the Extended Specimen Network (ESN)–a conceptual framework that places specimens at its center and connects them to disparate types of materials, including field photographs, field notes, maps, and more, to build a vast network of digital resources. Through a National Science Foundation Infrastructure Capacity for Biological Research grant, the Herbarium at California Botanic Garden and the Library at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas have partnered in an effort to preserve and provide physical and digital access to the collections of renowned American botanist and photographer, Sherwin J. Carlquist (1930–2021). Carlquist is best known for his significant contributions to the fields of island biogeography, evolutionary ecology, and wood anatomy.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:125%;margin:10px 0;padding:0;color:#757575;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:16px;text-align:left"><span style="font-size:15px"><span style="color:#000000"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif">Carlquist amassed more than 190,000 collection objects during his productive 70+ year career, including herbarium vouchers, wood specimens, specimen material preserved in spirits, microscope anatomy slides, photographs, negatives, slides, index envelopes, and field notebooks. This collaborative project, now in year four, aims to (1) curate the comprehensive Carlquist collection for long-term preservation; (2) digitize and mobilize the collection’s data; (3) link transcribed collection information, images, and metadata across all plant collections and archival objects; and (4) publish and make linked collection data publicly available through open-access platforms. ESN linkages created through this project have potential to facilitate immediate application to a suite of research areas, including systematics, wood anatomy, ecology, biogeography, island biology, phenology, plant conservation, history of science, plant humanities, digital humanities, and archival theory and practice. The Sherwin Carlquist Collection ESN project represents a unique opportunity for the collaboration of two different but interconnected disciplines to shepherd the way in which herbaria and archive communities envision, implement, and utilize ESNs within and between their collections. Project successes, challenges, and lessons learned during will be highlighted in this presentation.</span></span></span></p>

She received her Ph.D. in botany from Washington State University in 2013. Mare has worked as a botanist for over 25 years in locations throughout the United States, including New England, the Southwest, and the Pacific Northwest. Her research focuses on the systematics and biogeography of <em>Mertensia</em> (Boraginaceae), floristics of California, and aquatic vascular plants. In the Herbarium Mare has directed several grant-funded collection improvement and digitization projects, including the Carlquist Extended Specimen Network project. She is a taxon editor for the Flora of North America (FNA) and has authored several treatments for FNA.</span></span></span></p>
