*"Updates from the State of New Mexico’s Endangered Plants Program"*


*TALK DESCRIPTION*

New Mexico (NM) is the fourth most diverse US state in terms of vascular
plant diversity due its high diversity of geology, topography, and
ecosystems. The NM Endangered Plants Program is the state entity
responsible for managing the state endangered plant list, permitting take
of state endangered plants, as well as coordinating rare plant conservation
efforts throughout the Land of Enchantment. In this talk, Marty will give
an overview of the NM Endangered Plants Program, provide a summary of the
status of rare plants in NM, and discuss recent fieldwork conducted by the
Endangered Plants Program on some of NM’s rarest plant species highlighting
areas where additional research is needed.

*BIO*

Martin (Marty) Purdy is the Assistant State Botanist with the New Mexico
Forestry Division. His work is largely focused on conserving New Mexico’s
46 federally and state listed plants, and performing associated research,
monitoring, and survey efforts on those taxa. He has a BA in Environmental
Studies and a BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz
(2013), and an MS in Botany from California Botanic Garden and Claremont
Graduate University (2022). Prior to moving to New Mexico in 2022, Marty
worked for the Inyo National Forest and completed a floristic inventory of
Coyote Ridge and Flat (Inyo County, CA) for his MS thesis. Before that he
worked a wide variety of seasonal botany and natural resource positions for
universities and federal agencies ranging from plant conservation on San
Clemente Island to trail work in the Klamath Mountains. In his free time,
he is an avid iNaturalist contributor, horror movie consumer, and corduroy
appreciator.
