*TALK DESCRIPTION*

David Giblin initiated the 50 Peaks Project in 2021 to document the
diversity and distribution of alpine plants in Washington’s Cascades Range,
create baseline data for future climate change impact studies in the
alpine, locate new populations of rare plant taxa, and provide field- and
collections-based research opportunities for undergraduate students.
Through 2024 David and 12 students have visited 45 peaks, made over 1600
collections with accompanying silica-dried tissue samples, and generated a
novel dataset for exploring a diversity of topics relating to alpine plant
communities in Washington’s Cascade Range. Notably, a small minority of the
taxa documented are alpine specialists, most taxa are poor dispersers, and
proximity of peaks to one another is a poor predictor of alpine plant
community composition. Through collaborations with colleagues in British
Columbia, Wyoming, Idaho, and New Mexico, the group has begun exploring
alpine plant community dynamics across western North America through a
combined sampling of over 100 peaks. David will share results from these
surveys, along with preliminary findings from modeling climate change
projections on endemic alpine and subalpine taxa in Washington.
