“Documenting Local Floristic Diversity to Contribute to the Conservation &
Protection of Native Plants"

The Jepson eFlora is the foremost authority on the native and naturalized
vascular plants of California. The eFlora contains many resources vital to
the conservation and protection of the California flora, including
taxonomic treatments, distribution maps, illustrations, photographs, and
identification keys. The eFlora is kept up to date in a number of ways,
including yearly revisions that incorporate the newest data. These research
papers commonly result in the addition of new taxa, recircumscriptions of
existing taxa, and changes to biogeographic data. Floristic inventories are
particularly important in influencing our understanding of taxon
distributions, and play a key role in keeping the eFlora up to date. In
this talk, I will discuss examples from my own floristic inventory in the
Manter and Salmon Creek watersheds, a project I did as a master’s student
at the California Botanic Garden (Claremont Graduate University). I will
end with how individuals can best contribute their own knowledge to eFlora,
and how continued combined efforts are vital to the conservation and
preservation of the California flora.
