Botany Speaker
*Dr. Carrie M. Tribble*

"From the Pacific Northwest to the High Andes: Evolution and Biogeography
of Geophytic Plants"

*TALK DESCRIPTION*

Geophytic plants resprout from belowground perennating buds, relying on
underground storage organs to fuel regrowth after seasonal or periodic
dormancy. This growth form is often considered an adaptation to seasonal
climates, including Mediterranean ecosystems and temperate regions with
prolonged freezing. In this talk, I will explore the remarkable
morphological diversity of underground storage organs, the broad taxonomic
range of geophytic plants, and what this diversity reveals about their
evolutionary responses to climatic seasonality. I will also highlight how
geophytes have diversified and dispersed across landscapes—from the high
elevations of the Andean Cordillera to the Pacific Northwest.

*BIO*

Dr. Carrie M. Tribble is an assistant professor at the University of
Washington Department of Biology and a Curator at the Burke Museum. Her
main focus is plant evolution, morphological convergence (when organisms
that aren’t closely related evolve similar features or behaviors), and
biodiversity.

Tribble uses sophisticated statistical methods to model the evolution of
complex and understudied natural phenomena, and works on diverse plant
lineages, including monocots and ferns, in regions such as the American
tropics, Hawai’i, and the Pacific Northwest.

Tribble received her doctorate in integrative biology from the University
of California, Berkeley, in 2020, and was most recently Postdoctoral Fellow
and Collections Manager at University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa. Among many other
awards and grants, she has been recognized for her research and scholarship
by the National Science Foundation and was a Fulbright Student Researcher
in Peru.
