“The Patterns of Genetic and Morphological Variation in Manzanitas””

The manzanitas (genus *Arctostaphylos*) are an extremely diverse and
classically challenging group of woody plants, with a center of diversity
in the California Floristic Province. The genus has long attracted
attention from California botanists, who have puzzled over the boundaries
among species, and have wondered how the genus became so endemically
diverse in the CFP. In this talk I present results from a set of studies
using morphological or genomic data to assess boundaries among manzanita
taxa. Additionally, I present results from a molecular phylogeography study
aimed at inferring the biogeographic history of three widespread manzanita
species of western North America.

*Bio: *

Glen is a botanist with broad interests in the California flora, who is
pursuing a career in undergraduate education. Glen completed his bachelor’s
degree in biology at Cal Poly Pomona in 2017 and received his PhD in Plant
Biology in 2023 from UC Riverside, where he studied topics relating to the
evolution and diversity of manzanitas.
