Talk Description

This month we take a break from research talks to revisit some of the
interesting plants that appeared after the unusual rains of 2023. Carefully
documented photographs that show as many aspects of the morphology of the
plants as possible are a new and readily available resource for research,
now available on iNaturalist and other platforms. They show colors, shapes,
and architecture sometimes almost completely lost in herbarium specimens
and can lead to new insight into the biology of the plants. Combine the
improvement in photographic equipment with the eagle eye of great field
botanists like Steve Matson and discoveries are bound to follow. Most of
Steve’s photos are from the Owens Valley and Mojave deserts, but he covers
much of California, and his images have been used in rare plant
publications by many state and federal agencies around the country. He
collaborates with and does field work with many taxonomic specialists.

By living in eastern California and interacting with certain botanists
Steve has continued to pursue an overall goal of photo-documenting the
flora of that region specifically and California in general. His talk will
focus on a broad review of plants he saw in 2023 in Inyo and Mono Counties,
with highlights of taxonomic significance.

*Bio*

Steve Matson grew up in California. He received a B.S. in Physical Science
from Sierra Nevada College and a Masters in Philosophy from U.C. Santa
Barbara in 1986. His interest in plants began in 1987 when he asked that
big question "what is this"? That snowballed into involvement with the
California Native Plant Society (both the Tahoe and Bristlecone chapters).
Steve has taken many taxonomy workshops with UC Berkeley Jepson Herbarium.
He began contributing images to CalPhotos in the early 2000s, which now
number over 25,000. Steve has posted more than 12,000 observations of more
than 2,650 species on iNaturalist. Steve’s goal is to provide the botanical
community diagnostic images of as many California plants as he can.
