The California Floristic Province (CFP) is considered a global hotspot for
plant diversity. Recent studies in the CFP have shown evidence that budding
speciation is a main driver of diversification in the CFP. Budding
speciation occurs when a widespread species (“progenitor”) gives rise to a
narrowly distributed and ecologically-specialized species (“derivative”),
making the “derivative” species geographically nested or peripheral to the
“progenitor” at the time of speciation. Despite the recent evidence that
suggests budding speciation can be a major player in the assemblage of
diversity hot-spots, the predictions of budding speciation have not been
thoroughly tested at the microevolutionary scale. My talk will focus on the
research being performed at my laboratory at Cal Poly Humboldt on testing
budding speciation using genetics and phylogenetics at the population and
species level.

*Bio: *

Dr. Oscar Vargas is an Assistant Professor at Cal Poly Humboldt. His
research focuses on understanding spatio-temporal patterns of plant
evolution in hot spots of plant diversity by incorporating phylogenomics,
comparative phylogenetics, and biogeography. Oscar grew up in Colombia
where he obtained his BSc and MSc at the Universidad de los Andes, he moved
to the US to pursue a PhD in Plant Biology at The University of Texas at
Austin. After graduating from his PhD in 2016 Oscar was a postdoctoral
fellow at the University of Michigan and the University of California,
Santa Cruz; he joined Humboldt in 2020.
