"Misunderstood Relatives of Famous Weeds: The Genus *Amaranthus *in the
Southwestern U.S."

Talk Description

The genus *Amaranthus *contains around 70 species, the majority of which
are native to the Americas. Eleven *Amaranthus *species are globally
distributed agricultural weeds that have evolved resistance to at least one
chemical class of herbicides. Previous research in my lab has been focused
on the introduction, spread, and herbicide resistance evolution of Palmer
amaranth (*Amaranthus palmeri*) and waterhemp (*A. tuberculatus*) in
California; however, now we are broadening our investigations to ask, what
makes a plant an agricultural weed? My collaborators and I are using the
genus *Amaranthus*, which contains a mix of agricultural weeds,
domesticated species, and non-weedy species, as a starting point to answer
this question. To better understand the taxonomy and distribution of the
non-weedy species in the genus, I spent my sabbatical in Fall 2022 visiting
herbaria and making new field collections of several understudied
Southwestern species of *Amaranthus*. I came to several unexpected
preliminary conclusions about the geographic range and taxonomic status of
several of these species, which my lab is currently following up on with
genetic work. My findings are a good example of the importance of knowing
the basic biology and taxonomic status of species before basing
evolutionary or ecological studies on these taxa.

*Bio*

Dr. Katherine Waselkov is an associate professor in the Biology Department
at CSU, Fresno, where she teaches courses on evolution, plant anatomy,
systematic biology, plant taxonomy, and experimental design. Her research
lab of undergraduate and masters students explores many topics in plant
population genetics/genomics, phylogenetics, and taxonomy, focusing on the
genus *Amaranthus*, local species of the genus *Phlox*, and various other
agricultural weeds and native wildflowers in Central California. She is
also the curator of the Fresno State Herbarium (FSC), and many students
have been involved in the ongoing effort to digitize and revitalize the
collection since 2015. Her PhD is in Evolution, Ecology, and Population
Biology from Washington University in St. Louis (2013) with Dr. Ken Olsen
and Dr. Barbara Schaal, and her postdoc was with Dr. Carolyn Ferguson in
the Division of Biology at Kansas State University (2013-2015).
