Talk Description

Predicted maps of species geographical distributions and habitat
suitability have countless uses in threatened species management and
hypothesis testing. In this presentation, I will show the use of these maps
for field validation, which resulted in the discovery of several new
populations of *Ivesia webberi*, a cryptic, rare, and threatened desert
herb in California and Nevada. Furthermore, I used these maps to test the
hypothesis of isolation by landscape resistance on the population genetic
differentiation of this species. These two studies are integrated to guide
the management of this threatened plant.

*Bio*

Israel Borokini is starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Ecology, Montana State University, Bozeman. Until July 31, 2023, he was a
David Smith Conservation Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Scholar in the
University and Jepson Herbaria, University of California, Berkeley. He
received his PhD in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology from
University of Nevada, Reno. He is interested in investigating the
ecological and evolutionary drivers of biodiversity patterns and processes
across multiple scales, and in different biomes. He uses geospatial,
functional trait, ecological, and phylogenetic data, obtained from field
studies, lab procedures, and museum records to answer relevant research
questions. In his very little free time, he enjoys traveling, hiking in
nature, and soaking in hot springs.
