"The Pinyon Pine Syngameon:
Modeling the Past to Understand the Present and Predict the Future*"*

Talk Description

Syngameons are complex, multispecies, hybrid systems that manage to
maintain their participating species' identities while allowing for
extensive gene flow. The pinyon pine syngameon has a unique evolutionary
history full of copious admixture, adaptive introgression, and the creation
of not one, but two hybrid lineages with potential drought tolerance
traits. However, with human-induced climate change, the future of the
pinyon pine syngameon may be at risk, highlighting the importance of
incorporating hybridization and recognizing syngameons in conservation
practices.

Bio

I am a PhD candidate of Evolutionary Biology at SDSU in the Joint Doctoral
Program with UCR. Prior to graduate school, I earned my BS in Biology from
UC Irvine, where I studied hybridization and reproductive barriers in rare
and endangered Hawaiian flowers (with Ann Sakai and Steve Weller). My
current research in the Flores-Renteria lab consists of greenhouse, field,
and molecular work, focusing on hybrid systems, drought tolerance, and
ectomycorrhizae. In the little free time I have, I like to watch movies,
visit the dog beach, and play volleyball.
