Talk Description

As environmental change intensifies globally due to human activity, some
species will be more vulnerable to extinction than others. Identifying
vulnerable species as well as the characteristics that make them vulnerable
to extinction is a key concern in conservation science. Aspects of species’
rarity, such as range size and habitat specificity, as well as their
geographic position, such as elevation and distance to coast, mediate their
vulnerability to global change. However, the relationships between these
species’ characteristics and vulnerability to different change drivers
(e.g., climate change vs. land use change) remains poorly understood. This
talk will explore the relationship between rarity, geography, and exposure
to climate and land use change for 106 plant species in the California
Floristic Province.

Bio

Brooke Rose is a PhD candidate in Dr. Janet Franklin’s lab in the
Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California,
Riverside. Prior to graduate school she earned a M.S. in geography at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she used remote sensing to
understand forest disturbance dynamics in the southeastern U.S. Her current
research seeks to understand how biogeography influences plant
vulnerability to global change using spatial data and ecological modeling.
