YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Frank and Joan Randall Tehachapi Preserve (the Preserve) is the
Conservancy’s largest preserve in California, encompassing over 75,000
acres of diverse habitats from low elevation grasslands to coniferous
forest covered mountain peaks. The Preserve is a critical component of the
irreplaceable landscape-scale linkage that connects the vast Intermountain
West to some of the continent’s most biologically rich regions along the
California coast. The Preserve is managed to maximize the capacity for
local and regional species to adapt in the face of rapid global change. The
Preserve Ecologist is a key member of the Preserve’s management team,
providing the technical and scientific support needed to collaboratively
define and advance ambitious conservation objectives.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*

through implementation of an applied science program. The Preserve
Ecologist informs management practices through conducting scientific
surveys and research, managing field projects, writing reports and
developing proposals. The Preserve Ecologist collects, manages and analyzes
data, and partners with experts to fill information gaps. They use this
information along with the best available science to identify priority
conservation targets, assess potential management activities, implement
actions, and evaluate outcomes. They use the adaptive management process to
advance effective and efficient stewardship practices to maximize retention
of biodiversity within, and functional ecological connectivity through, the
Preserve.

*RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE*

   - Lead staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.

   - Manage grants, contracts and request for proposals.
   - Foster productive working relationships with key internal and external
   stakeholders.
   - Occasionally lead field trips for Preserve visitors, providing natural
history interpretation and context regarding the Preserve’s importance for
conservation and the Conservancy’s broader goals.
   - Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in
hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*

   - Master's Degree in science related field and 1 year of experience or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
   - Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting
   scientific data.
