POSITION PURPOSE:
To mentor and assist prospective STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) transfer and reentry students from designated community colleges in their decisions to attend UCR in pursuit of a STEM degree and/or to become a science or mathematics secondary level teacher.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Mentor up to two (2) community college student mentees - Provide consistent and timely contact (phone, email, in-person visits) and maintain proper documentation of mentoring activities.

Represent the University in a professional manner, which includes appropriate attire.

Attend designated community colleges outreach activities.  Activities may include forums, workshops, outreach tabling for prospective students interested in STEM majors and possible presentations promoting STEM teaching or majors.

Participate in on and off-campus events that promote STEM programs, STEM majors, and STEM teaching careers

Provide opportunities for community college mentee(s) to visit UCR; including opportunities to attend classes with you, tour the campus, and preview UCR student life activities.

Participate in appropriate STEM Club activities/functions at UCR and/or the appropriate community college with mentee.

COMPENSATION
Estimated Hours:         20 - 25 hours per quarter
Hourly rate:                 $15/hours

Minimum Requirements:
Affiliation:
*         Active SMI Students or approved UCR programs

Academic:
*         2.5 GPA or higher (cumulative)
*         maintain good academic standing
*         Completion of EDUC 3 or equivalence or approved STEM program

UCR Knowledge:
*          Knowledgeable about UCR's STEM majors, UCR programs, student service departments, the application process, and student life activities  including STEM and TTSM clubs

Experience in effective communication & interpersonal skills:
*         Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively mentor prospective students.
*         Conduct presentations and obtain information, explain policies and procedures etc.
Other requirements:
*         Must be dependable and able to commit time to consistent, active participation in the Aurora Project.
*         Must have dependable transportation to community colleges and other appropriate off-campus sites.

Preferred Qualifications:
Current Transfer Student
