SOROPTIMIST OPPORTUNITY AWARD

The Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. This award was established in 1972 because of interest in "upward mobility for women." Recipients may use the cash award to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books, supplies, childcare and transportation.

Soroptimist International of Riverside (SIR) will award up to $3,000 to this year's recipient(s). The local winner's application will be forwarded for regional judging and may be chosen to receive a further monetary award. The eligibility requirements include:

* Applicants must be women, either single or married, with primary financial responsibility for family members other than themselves (dependents, which can include children, a spouse and/or parents).

* They must be attending, or have been accepted to, an undergraduate degree or vocational skills training program.

* They must demonstrate financial need.

Applications must be completed and received by December 15, 2012, along with two (2) letters of recommendation. These letters can be from a teacher, counselor, minister, or anyone who knows the family situation and can vouch for the applicant's need and sincerity. The local winner(s) will be selected in January, and the award will be presented at a special luncheon. We will notify the winner(s) of the exact date.

Thank you for your interest in making this opportunity available to your students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email-Tillie Soliz at tilliesoliz at hotmail.com or Maggie Herrera at maggieherrera72 at yahoo.com<mailto:maggieherrera72 at yahoo.com>.

Applications must be signed and postmarked to SIR, P.O. Box 1631, Riverside, CA 92502 by December 15, 2012.

Sincerely,
Tillie Soliz and Maggie Herrera, Co-Chairs
Women's Opportunity Committee
