The College of Education at Cal State San Bernardino is planning a public screening of a 2011 documentary, "The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman," followed by a panel discussion.

The free two-hour screening is set for noon Feb. 29 in the university's New Library Media Center. The panel discussion, facilitated by students seeking doctoral degrees in education, will follow from 2 to 3 p.m., also in the library.

Latino Education and Advocacy Days is co-host of the screening and discussion, Executive Director Enrique G. Murillo Jr. said in an email.

A group of New York City public school teachers and parents wrote and produced this documentary in response to Davis Guggenheim's 2010 film "Waiting for Superman," which they call misleading, according to the producer's plot summary on the Internet Movie Database.

"The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman" critiques what producers call "an increasingly free-market driven education system, the undermining of teacher unions and overall faith in charter schools." They say their film highlights the experiences of public school parents and educators and takes what they call a holistic look at education reform.

In a 2009 study, "Multiple Choice: Charter School Performance in 16 States," the Center for Research on Education Outcomes found that only 17 percent of charter schools performed better than comparable traditional public schools and 46 percent performed worse.
