Inspiring Young Scientists with Solar Energy

 

 This course will address real-world engineering and educational challenges
while serving the needs of the community through collaboration with UCR Math
Engineering Science and Achievement (MESA) Schools Program. Undergraduates
will be introduced to basic solar energy concepts and educational assessment
techniques while working as a team to mentor and inspire MESA middle school
students through solar energy activities. The first half of the course will
be used to develop the solar energy activities and assessment materials.
Undergraduates will administer a pre-assessment survey, meet the middle
school students, and share with them reasons for becoming an engineer and
pursuing a college degree. The second half of the course will be used to
teach 'hands-on' lessons, administer a post-assessment; and revise the
lesson based on feedback from students and their teachers. The course
targets future math and science teachers, as well as scientists, engineers,
and mathematicians.
