Invites you to attend a symposium presented by:
Dr. Leticia Oseguera
Assistant Professor in the Department of Education with a joint appointment
in the Department of Chicano/Latino Studies at UC Irvine.
speaking on:
The Influence of Institutional Retention Climates on
Student Persistence to Degree Completion: A Multilevel
Approach
Using multi-institutional data from the
Cooperative Institutional Research Programs
(CIRP) annual survey of entering freshmen, the
Higher Education Research Institutes Faculty
Surveys, campus registrars offices, and IPEDS
data, I evaluate the extent to which peer
institutional retention climates and faculty
normative environments influence individual six
year retention rates. I use hierarchical
generalized linear models (HGLM) to examine the
extent to which institutional context (as
measured by peer retention climate and faculty
normative climate), net of students ability,
expectations, and family socioeconomic status,
influence students persistence behavior. I found
that peer climates as defined by a student bodys
aggregated report of stop out or transfer
intentions, did independently determine
whether a student would persist or not as did a
campuses overall retention rate. While past
research has overlooked peer and faculty
normative climates, the results from this work
call for the attention of peer institutional retention climates.
