speaking on:
Education for What? Engaging Communities for the
Classroom and the Country
Thursday, October 9, 2008
4:00 5:30 pm
1215 Sproul Hall
A recent report showed that ten million or 20% of
all public school students are Latina/o and by
2050, it is predicted that Black and Latina/o
youth combined will make up well over 50% of all
school-aged youth. It is also well documented
that Black and Latina/o youth have a 50%+ dropout
rate, particularly in racially,economically, and
linguistically segregated communities. The scope
of the problem is further exacerbated when
research shows that 50,000 Latina/o youth turn
eighteen years of age each month. Given this
demographic transformation and the graduation
crisis among students of color in general, it is clear that
researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners are
facing an urgent challenge. To further complicate
matters, todays policy environment has created
an era of test prep pedagogy in which
historically marginalized schools struggle to
engage students to prevent dropout and promote
engagement and success. This presentation will
address: 1) how research on urban schooling can
help understand and resist school dropout, 2) how
participatory action research (PAR) with youth
can be used to engage youth and educators, and 3)
how Quality Education as a Constitutional Right
may serve as a vehicle to mobilize stakeholders for
positive educational change. Case study examples
of Rodriguezs work with youth and teachers in
Boston and Miami will be shared to illuminate the
significance of each research strand and its
relevance to educators and education.
