"Number Sense: Examining its Properties Amongst Australian
Kindergarten Students"

November 18, 2008
3:00-4:30pm
Sproul 1215

The National Numeracy Review Report (2008) highlights the importance
of students acquiring proficiency in numeracy during compulsory
schooling, as it has long term benefits for educational and labor
market opportunities. While Australia continues to rank highly in
international comparisons of numeracy achievement, these same studies
report that Australia has a broader distribution of achievement than
many countries. That is, there are many students who do not achieve
essential numeracy skills and are therefore disadvantaged in terms of
entry into the workforce, and quality of life.

This study reports the initial findings of an investigation into the
development of an early, but essential, feature of early numeracy
development: number sense. Number sense has become recognized as an
important part of every child's foundation for undertaking higher
level mathematics. This talk will report an investigation of number
sense development, along with other key developmental variables
(i.e., working memory, creativity, anxiety) for 70 Kindergarten
students. Concluding commentary will focus on trends in number sense
development as two sets of longitudinal data are collected across 2009.
