Biography: Gözde Demirer was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey and received her B.S. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Koc University in 2015. Gözde completed her Chemical Engineering Ph.D. at UC Berkeley with Prof. Markita Landry in 2020. During her Ph.D. studies, she developed nanotechnologies for plant biomolecule delivery and genetic engineering using carbon nanomaterials. For her postdoctoral work, Gözde joined Prof. Siobhan Brady's lab at UC Davis, where she studied nutrient use efficiency of tomato and developed functional genomics and synthetic biology tools in collaboration with Prof. Nicola Patron at Earlham Institute.

During her graduate and postdoctoral studies, Gözde has published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers with over 1000 citations and presented in more than 30 conferences and workshops. She currently serves as an Editor in Frontiers in Genome Editing and an Editorial Board member in GEN Biotechnology. She has received many awards, such as the Faculty for the Future Fellowship by Schlumberger Foundation, Resnick Sustainability Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship, Merck Research Award, Women’s Initiative Committee’s Travel Award, MIT Chemical Engineering Rising Star, and most recently the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award from the Life Science Editors Foundation.

Gözde will be starting as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Caltech in September 2022. The Demirer lab will work on bioengineering of plants and rhizosphere for food security, sustainability, and environmental remediation using novel nanotechnology and synthetic biology approaches.
