Dear PhD Students,

To ensure you are registered accurately and remain eligible for funding, Biomedical Sciences is implementing a new approval process for research credits-specifically BMSC 297 (Directed Research) and BMSC 299 (Research for Dissertation). Hermila will continue assisting and facilitating enrollment in spring courses. However, you are still responsible for reviewing your schedule to verify accuracy in enrollment. Please log in to your student account to confirm your enrollment details before the start of the quarter.

Next Steps for Registration
Before finalizing your schedule for the upcoming quarter, please meet with your Major Professor/faculty mentor to discuss your required coursework and research unit distribution.
We are requesting that your Major Professor send confirmation of your unit distribution for BMSC 297 and 299 by Monday, March 16. This ensures we have enough time to process your enrollment before the Spring quarter begins.

Enrollment Guidelines
As you plan your Spring 2026 schedule, please keep these program requirements in mind:

  * Full-Time Status: You must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units to maintain financial support, fellowships, and employment eligibility.
  * Filing Fee Status: Students approved for this status are not permitted to enroll in courses. An approved petition is required.
  * Recurring Units: Students must register for both BMSC 252 (1 unit) and BMSC 254 (1 unit) every quarter.
  *   Research Unit Limits:
     * BMSC 297: 1-6 units (3 to 18 hours of research per week).
     * BMSC 299: 1-12 units (3 to 36 hours of research per week).
     * Note: Research units may be reduced (fewer than 10 units) if you are still completing Year 1 or 2 core curriculum or specialized electives.
  * Teaching Assistants: Students serving as TAs should enroll in BMSC 302 (Directed Teaching, 2 units). This course has a repeatable limit of 6 units maximum.

Looking Ahead
We are currently reviewing options to streamline this process with an online form. We aim to have this tool live in time for the Fall enrollment period to make the process more efficient for everyone.

If you have any questions regarding your specific unit count or status, feel free to reach out.

Best regards,
