Sent on behalf of Dr. Monica Carson,

Dear Biomed Graduate Students and BMSC252 enrollees,

The Division of Biomedical Sciences is committed to self-examination and implementation of an active anti-racist agenda as part of our research and our graduate curriculum. In this Winter Quarter BMSC252 (In person, G650 at 4PM, Mondays, Feb 7-March 7), we take the opportunity to integrate our SOM Health Equity, Social Justice and Anti-Racism (HESJAR) curricular thread into our graduate and research curriculum. We welcome all who wish to participate. Each week, we will provide links to readings that help set the stage for each session's presentations and discussions. At the end of this email are readings for the first session plus some additional thought provoking series of articles and database resources for those seeking additional information.

Feb 7: Professors Monica J Carson & Carlos Cortes - Introduction to HESJAR, Discussion of Readings and Questions

Introduction and BackGround
While race is a social construct, there are biological consequences to the experience of race and racism. As a biomedical sciences research division, our expertise is not in sociology or related disciplines analyzing racism or structural aspects of racism. However, we feel that we can fundamentally contribute to promoting an anti-racist agenda in our fields by examining how ethnicity and race have been used to re-enforce structural racism and implicit racism in research. This includes but is not limited to the inappropriate use of race and ethnicity as a variables and parameters to normalize/pathologize race as well as to obscure and even mis-associate variables, epidemiology, molecular mechanisms, biomarkers and therapeutic effectiveness.

This quarter, we will have presentations, readings and discussions helping us to consider together the following questions. We look forward to what we will discover together!

Questions to be discussed this Winter Quarter

Historically, how have the biomedical sciences dealt with the issue of race both in research and in teaching?

How have biomedical scientists addressed the categorizing of race both scientifically and from a social constructionist perspective?

When we measure race/ethnicity and find associations between race/ethnicity and other measures, what might be behind those associations?

What race-related controversies have developed within the biomedical sciences and how have they been addressed?

What research has been done on race-related inequities within the biomedical sciences?

How have the biomedical sciences responded to the recent surge of interest in anti-racism?

In what respects have biomedical scientists attempted to adjust data to account for perceived race-related differences?

How has racial thinking contributed to the biomedical sciences, such as in the development of categorical systems and biomedical instruments?

What new questions regarding race need to be addressed within the biomedical sciences?
