Dear students,
We are thrilled to announce the offering of BMSC 222T: Toxicology and Human Health during summer 2026 session B from July 27-August 29.
How do we distinguish between a life-saving medicine, a well-known dietary supplement, and a silent toxin? In this course, students will explore the critical intersection of pharmacology, toxicology, and community advocacy, moving beyond the classroom to understand how the human body processes everyday substances ranging from essential prescription medications to widely used health supplements. A central focus is the liver and kidneys, the body's primary chemical processing and filtration plants, where students will master the mechanics of metabolism (CYP450 pathways) and the "First Pass" effect to understand why a substance's origin matters less than its chemical behavior once ingested. By the end of this course, students will be equipped with the clinical literacy needed to identify toxic risks and explain complex chemical interactions.
* Course: BMSC 222T: Toxicology and Human Health
* Instructor: Rakesh Singh, PhD
* Time/Location: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, SOM Education II building room 105
