[Biomed_grad_faculty] URGENT: Faculty Vote Needed - Qual Exams Completion timeline

Dear BMSC Graduate Program Faculty,

The BMSC Graduate Leadership is requesting a mandatory faculty vote on the Written and Oral Qualifying exam completion timeline. The current catalog text/language reflects a mismatch in the deadlines. We are proposing the alignment of both the written and oral examinations deadlines.

This modification will establish an equitable normative timeline for all students.

Exceptions: the graduate program will consider extensions to the deadline for extenuating circumstances like personal/family emergency on a case-by-case basis. Students would need to gain approval from the graduate advisor with major professor consultation.

Existing program requirement in general catalog
Proposed program requirement

Written (Part I) and Oral Qualifying (Part II) Examinations

Part I is usually completed in the spring quarter of year 2 and no later than the
fall quarter of year 3 of a student's graduate
training.

Part II must be completed no
later than the end of year 3 of the student's
graduate training.

Written (Part I) and Oral Qualifying (Part II) Examinations

(no change to Part I)
Part I is usually completed in the spring quarter of year 2 and no later than the
fall quarter of year 3 of a student's graduate
training.

Part II should be completed by the end of year 2 and no later than the fall quarter of year 3 of a student's graduate training.
