[Bgsa] what programs work well for making figures for publication?

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions!  In case you have had a
similar question, here is what people told me:

Many people recommend Sigma Plot.  It is expensive, though, if you
don't know anyone who can lend it to you.  Some free alternatives that
people suggested were making the plots in R or Python and then, if
needed, out-putting them as .svg or .pdf files and editing them in
Inkscape.  Another free graphing program is gnuplot.
