In light of the interest in getting a dedicated central printer, I think
it's best to use the departmental photocopier which is already paid for,
there's already a service contract, it is very fast, and can print
double-sided to save paper and space in your filing cabinet.

You can try using the instructions below to hook up your computer. I
have successfully done it on Windows XP, MacOSX (10.5), and Linux
(Ubuntu and Mandriva), so it can be done!

Good luck
Senanu

Instructions for Windows XP
###########################
1. Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes
2. Add Printer
3. Click Next
4. Choose a "Local printer" rather than a network one (I know, this
seems kind of weird, but it works)
It will say it can't find one, just click Next
5a. Use the following port "IP_138.23.90.253" (standard TCP/IP port
5b. If that doesn't appear, you should be able to create it in the other
option.
6. Choose the model of printer: Lanier MP 7500/LD275 PS
7. Choose the obvious options until you are done.

When you go to print a PDF (I presume it'll be similar for any other
type of document),
1. Choose Print
2. Find the printer in the top box
3. Click Properties and go to the Job Log tab
4. Enter the User ID in the top box. You don't seem to need to enter it
in the bottom box labeled "Enable User Code"
Go to the layout tab to pick "print on both sides" to save paper. In the
"Advanced" box at the bottom of the screen you can also choose any
number of other options, including Stapling. Click OK to close dialog boxes.

Finally, click OK to print. Walk over to the mailroom and pick up your
beautifully printed, collated, and stapled job!

Instructions for Linux and Mac OSX
##################################
0. You will probably need to give yourself "root" access to your
computer. If you've never used the command line, you probably haven't
turned it on. It's a simple procedure described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528
0.25 You may also need to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2754
0.5. You may need to download a driver from Lanier's website. The one
you get will depend on which version of Mac OS you have. The website
is:
http://lanier.com/downloads/driverFrame.aspx?path=http://support.aficio.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/lan_u/model/mp55/mp55en.htm

--------Now for hooking up the copier.
1. Use a web browser (I know, it seems weird) to get to http://localhost:631
2. Click Add Printer
3. Enter name, location, description. They can be whatever you want to
identify the copier by. Click Continue
4. For device, choose "Internet Printing Protocol (http)"
5. For device URI, "http://138.23.90.253:631/ipp/"
6. For Make, Choose "LANIER"
7. For Model, choose "LANIER LD245 PS(en)" (the printer is really a
LD275, but it may not appear and LD245 works. This is where you may
need to install the driver. Sorry, but it was a long time ago when I
did this and can't remember the details.
8. When it asks for your username, give the administrator name and
password that you use on your computer for installing new software.
9. In the printers tab, find "set printer options" to set double-sided,
stapling etc.
10. In the application from which you want to print (eg. Preview (for
PDFs)), click the bar that says "Preview" and choose "Job Log" from
which you can enter your user ID for the copier. Just put it in the User
ID section, no need to put it in the Enable User Code section.
11. Click Print
12. Try to get to the copier before it finishes printing...
