Greetings All,
In 2026, we celebrate a historic milestone: 100 years of national Black
history commemorations. What began in 1925 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson
launched Negro History Week, has grown into an annual experience we now
know as Black History Month. Through the work of Dr. Woodson and the
founders of Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALH),
Black history has become an essential part of so many lives across the
globe.
>From early observances of emancipation milestones to federal recognition of
Black History Month in 1976 and 1986, this tradition has become a powerful
tool for truth-telling and collective learning. As we mark the 100th Black
History theme and as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, ASALH
invites us to reflect on the impact and purpose of these commemorations,
especially at a time when Black history faces renewed challenges through
various outlets and means. Now more than ever, telling an accurate,
honest history
matters, especially here on our campus. We hope you will join us in
honoring this century-long legacy and engaging with the 2026 theme: A
Century of Black History Commemorations.
As we prepare for the Winter Quarter, African Student Programs is gearing
up to celebrate Black Heritage Month, and we welcome opportunities to
collaborate and uplift the incredible events and programs planned by your
offices. If your team is interested in partnering with us, please reach out
to our Assistant Director, Aurea Thomas (aurea.thomas at ucr.edu), by December
12th, and cc me.
If your team is hosting any events or initiatives that you would like
included in our Black Heritage Month calendar or communications, please
share the event name, date, time, location, and a brief description with
Aurea by December 12th, and cc me as well.
Your contributions help ensure we celebrate and honor Black history,
culture, and achievements in meaningful, campus-wide ways across the
Student Affairs division. Thank you for your ongoing support of African
Student Programs!
Onward and Upward,
Jamal J. Myrick, Ed.D.
