Subject: [mcsball] Fwd: January 17 Special Meeting of the Academic Senate Assembly
Dear All:
Another reminder:
A Special Meeting of the Academic Senate Assembly will happen tomorrow, Jan 17 starting at 3 PM. The Zoom link can be found below. Have a look at the attached pdf file that contains the meeting agenda.
This special meeting is meant to address a number of somewhat contentious issues that impinge on faculty welfare, including faculty compensation and cost of living increases, cybersecurity measures being imposed related to use of computers and the internet, and steeply increasing cost of health care for UC faculty. There is a prevailing feeling among many faculty that decisions made by UC admin regarding these issues have not included enough in the way of “shared governance”, that almost mythical UC tradition that we all love but suspect is often overlooked by our leaders.
Walter Leal at UC Davis has been a prime mover in getting faculty mobilized to address these issues and hence the special meeting scheduled for tomorrow was called. It should be interesting and we all can attend on Zoom.
Best,
Mike

The agenda and documents are important; see attachment.
The meeting petitioners asked the Chair to share the agenda in advance and to allow equal time for faculty questions and administration "presentations." The response we received appears below my signature.
Many of you have been asking what happened with the Vote of No Confidence at UC Davis. We, too, have the same type of question. The delay in releasing the results is perplexing. The last time we had a similar vote here, the results were released within hours. This time, weeks have passed, and we do not know the outcome. It was also odd that the Divisional Chair shared with the entire faculty "an analysis" of the resolution by a UCOP staff member. Even more surprising, the Divisional Chair (whom I believe is well-meaning) denied a group of Senate faculty to present a point-by-point rebuttal to the "analysis" through the same channel provided for a nonmember of the Division.
All the best, WL

Dear Professor Leal,
Thank you for your message. My aim is to lead a respectful and engaged Special Meeting of the Assembly on January 17th. Following the relevant Senate bylaws, the meeting agenda will be shared with Assembly members at least 10 calendar days before the Assembly is convened. I will ask administrative colleagues to address their respective topics succinctly, followed by Q&A. With respect to the duration of interchanges, I will calibrate time allocations based on the number of participants who wish to speak. Certainly, in the case of relatively few speakers, interchanges can be longer.
