Happy Pride Month! Did you know Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall Uprising, a series of protests that took place in June 1969 in New York City? The uprising was sparked by the relentless police raids and mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly Black and Latinx transgender women, at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village.
Marsha P. Johnson, a Black transgender activist, and other Black and brown queer and trans individuals played vital roles in resisting the police violence and fighting for LGBTQ+ rights during the Stonewall Uprising. Their bravery and resilience were instrumental in igniting a new era of LGBTQ+ activism and organizing.
The struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the fight against systemic racism have always been interconnected. In the early years of the gay rights movement, activists such as Bayard Rustin, Audre Lorde, and James Baldwin—prominent Black queer figures—advocated for the rights of both the Black and LGBTQ+ communities. They recognized that the fight for liberation encompassed multiple aspects of identity and that equality could not be achieved by leaving any marginalized group behind. ASP will be sharing a number of resources and information to amplify histories and voices from the Diaspora.
