On behalf of Omar Aziz:
The month of Ramadan begins Thursday March 23rd! I am sending this email to provide you all with an infographic and resources to support students, staff, faculty who may be observing.

Additional Resources:
Article - 9 Questions About the Muslim Holy Month You Were Too Embarrassed to Ask
NASPA Webinar on Supporting Muslim Students on Campus
MIT Division of Student Life Ways to Support Muslim students

Some important things to keep in mind:
Religious Accommodations
Ramadan coincides with Finals Week
You may see increased requests for time to pray, break the daily fast, etc.
Different Start & End Dates
Based on a lunar calendar and it is common for Muslims to start and end on different days (by 1 or 2 days)
Ramadan looks different depending on the person
Some Muslims may choose not to participate or may participate in different ways
Underlying conditions may be exacerbated
Although individuals who have an illness are exempt from fasting some may still do so
Mental health issues may increase because of lack of sleep, food
Those with eating disorders may have certain habits return if they feel pressure to observe the fast
In addition to fasting, students are likely operating on highly altered sleep schedules which can impact mood, academics, etc.
Try not to assume people are or are not fasting
This is a personal decision

 Time of Reflection and Joy
Welcomed with joy because seen as a time for increased levels of spirituality, charity, breaking bad habits, and building community
The holiday Eid comes at the end of the month and is one of the biggest celebrations in Islam

Ramadan Mubarak (Happy Ramadan) and if there’s anything you need from me or have questions, please feel to reach out.

Every year, CHASS invites students to speak to their fellow graduates. This year, the College invites students to speak on the following topic:

We in CHASS say that “At Home in the World” is more than just a saying or a slogan. It really represents what it means to be a student of the humanities, arts, and social sciences at UC Riverside. Students are gaining knowledge and developing skills that prepare them for the increasing globalization of the world. How have CHASS and UCR prepared you to be “At Home in the World?”

We are accepting applications for student speakers for the ceremonies on Wednesday, June 21st, at 8:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 6 pm. Each of these students will represent their fellow graduates and present a 3-minute speech.

To be considered the applicant must:
Be a degree candidate approved to walk at the 2023 Commencement
Have achieved a record of academic excellence while at UCR
Demonstrate exceptional public speaking ability
Demonstrate a high level of involvement in the campus and the community at large
A committee of faculty will review the applications. Those applicants who are selected for an interview will be asked to present a draft of their 2-minute commencement speech to the committee.

More information, along with the application, is available at https://chass.ucr.edu/blog/2023/03/07/69th-commencement-student-speaker-application
