To all of our chapter members and supporting faculty and staff, congratulations on making it through the Fall quarter. We hope you all got a chance to recharge during Winter break and are ready to start the Winter quarter off strong. Carole Sanders - Deputy Construction Manager - California

We would like to congratulate one of our major supporters and contributors to our organization, Ms. Carole Sanders, for recently accepting the position as Deputy Construction Manager, overseeing the California alignment of the Las Vegas to Victorville High-Speed Rail project for Brightline West. Carole has managed large complex transportation projects and has 35 years of experience working in the construction industry. Some of these projects include managing the California High-Speed Rail CP 2-3 construction project in the Central Valley and assigned as the Senior Resident Engineer over the construction of the SR-210 Freeway, Segments 9, 10 and 11 located in the cities of Fontana, Rialto, and San Bernardino. Carole's experience is supplemented by her B.S. in Civil Engineering from Howard University and M.S. in Transportation Management from, San Jose State University, Norm Mineta Transportation Institute. Carole is also a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California. We are very proud of Carole's accomplishments and we look forward to her success in her new position.

UCR BCOE March Challenge Recap

The third annual BCOE Match Challenge raised $78,000 for the Dean’s Innovation Fund, which provides direct support for 14 of the college’s professional student organizations including ours. A total of $38,000 in matching funds, generously provided by lead sponsor Triad Magnetics and other donors, were made available from Sept. 21, 2020, through Oct. 31, 2020, allowing donors to double the impact of their gifts. NSBE ended this challenge by raising the second-largest amount of funds with a total of $11,843.75. We are extremely proud of our efforts and are truly thankful to all of our donors. These funds will go towards both our NSBE Endowed fund and the professional and academic development of our members.

NSBE Outreach event with Palm Middle School:

On Saturday, November 21st, we conducted our first outreach event with students from Palm Middle School. SHPE also participate in the project, and in total, we had 15 enthusiastic middle school students in attendance. For our project, everyone created a balloon rocket and afterward, we learned the engineering concepts behind the project and brainstormed ways to make our rocket balloon travel farther. The event was a success and we plan to continue coordinating events to create a pipeline for today's students to become tomorrow's Engineers.

NSBE Academic Excellence Chair Achievements

During the Fall quarter our Academic Excellence Chair, Etchi Ako, recently organized an academic excellence checkpoint system for members to track their academic proficiency and maximize their final grades. In addition, Etchi made a huge accomplishment by winning the Research Exhibition event during our annual Fall Regional Conference. In this event, Etchi competed against all graduate students and was emailed soon after to be congratulated for winning first place with her research presentation.

Camp Scholars Program<https://ucr.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5414ac223eda7fb42887bce72&id=70a953a67a&e=242d998f2f>

You are invited to apply to the CAMP Scholars Program for the 2020-21 academic year. Current UCR STEM students who are researching remotely and meet CAMP Eligibility criteria may receive funding of  $1000 per quarter for working 10-12 hours per week in a faculty-mentored research lab.

The priority deadline is Sunday, December 27, 2020. Late applications will be accepted however selections are made on a rolling basis (the earlier the better).

Eligibility:

  *   Be currently accepted to research under a UCR STEM faculty lab for 10-12 hours during the Winter 2021 quarter.
  *   Be African American, Chicano, Latino, Native American, or Pacific Islander (Pacific peoples from Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Cook Islands, other islands in Polynesia)
  *   Be a UC Riverside student in good academic standing
  *   Have a minimum 2.7 UC cumulative GPA
  *   Be a declared STEM major
  *   Be a US Citizen or permanent resident
  *   Intend to pursue a Masters (M.S./M.A./MPH) or Ph.D. in a STEM field after graduation
*Students who have transferred from a community college are especially encouraged to apply.

Founded by a group of space professionals from diverse backgrounds, the Zed Factor Fellowship empowers and engages learners and aspiring aerospace professionals from underrepresented backgrounds through hands-on, practical experiences working in and contributing to the leading companies of the aerospace community. Applications are currently being accepted for placement with leading aerospace companies for internships beginning in late spring/early summer 2021.

The American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship

The National Society of Black Engineers is the premier organization serving African Americans in engineering and technology. As a technical community service association, NSBE is the link between the African American community and the world of technology. NSBE supports and promotes the aspirations of professionals, students, and pre-college students by providing a multitude of scholarships and awards to its members within their NSBE profiles.

This past July, we accomplished a major feat by successfully establishing our UCR NSBE Endowment Fund. Currently, our goal is to raise $100,000 and with how much we've raised so far during our matching challenges, we are almost 50% towards completing this goal with a total amount of $46,100. If you have not done so yet, please donate and maximize the number of funds we can obtain to go towards our endowment fund.

Help us do our part to provide a more stable, permanent source of funding for our members to excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact our communities.
