Hi everyone,

AVC Elizabeth Romero<https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/romeroe> and Kathy Eiler<https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/kathleee> from UCR's Government Relations called an emergency meeting yesterday with several UCR groups including Staff Assembly.

Apparently there are advanced discussions going on RIGHT NOW to redistrict UCR away from the rest of the City of Riverside and, instead, include it in a new district with cities as far away as Temecula.

Why does this matter? Well, it makes it harder for UCR to advocate for our local community of staff, students, and faculty, of which many live in Riverside (including me). We also have several existing relationships with elected officials who serve our local community in Riverside.

Districts will be finalized on Saturday... but there's still time to influence the California Citizens Redistricting Commission that is redrawing the boundaries. More information is below.

Elizabeth and Kathy have specifically asked us to consider calling in during the public comment portion of a nightly meeting that is happening Wednesday to Friday, between 5-6 pm. It can require several minutes on hold, but Kathy and Elizabeth said it can have a HUGE impact.

If you're unable to call, there's info below about sending an email and/or joining a tag board.

I'm happy to talk to any of you later today at our Flannels & Frost holiday event<https://events.ucr.edu/event/ucr_staff_assembly_holiday_party_flannels_frost_1437>.

You can also talk directly to AVC Elizabeth Romero who is holding daily Zoom office hours through Friday, 10-11 am. Details here:

Elizabeth Romero, UCR is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Subject: Redistricting

Dear Jeff and Agam,

As you may know, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission (CCRC) will be finalizing the Inland Empire (Riverside and San Bernardino counties) district maps by Saturday, December 18th. Do you have time today to discuss the impact of redistricting to UCR?

The draft map below illustrates the proposed California State Assembly district that UC Riverside will be placed in (AD63-SWRIV). For continuity of representation and to maintain our longstanding partnership with the City of Riverside on housing and infrastructure, economic and workforce development, educational initiatives it is imperative that UC Riverside be added to the AD 58-JRC district.

Refer to the website below for the most recent iteration of the map. See map below or here: https://www.wedrawthelinesca.org/map_viewer

It is an interactive map.

* Enter UCR's address: 900 University Avenue, Riverside

* Click on Assembly District: Iteration 12-6-21

* Then zoom in to see the map

Esteemed California Citizens Redistricting Commission,

My name is ______________. I am a (state your affiliation such as resident/business owner/alumni/student/faculty) with ____________________. I am writing to urge you to adjust the California State Assembly district boundaries that encompass the University of California, Riverside (UCR) located at 900 University Avenue, Riverside CA 92521. In the current map iteration dated 12/8/2021 proposes UCR be part of AD63-SWRIV which splits the campus from the greater Riverside area.

Why is this important to you? Personalize the message and keep it brief.

The university has been a part of the greater Riverside community since 1906, when UC established the Citrus Experiment Station to address challenges associated with the region's thriving citrus and agriculture industry. Since then, UCR's growth has coincided closely with the growth of the City and region.

The City and UCR actively partner on various initiatives including a significant innovation and economic development corridor, UCR Arts Block in downtown Riverside, and Americorps University Eastside Community Collaborative to name a few. Students living off-campus live in the City of Riverside throughout the University Avenue corridor.

Other topics may include: UCR Health, Off-Campus Research, CARB Partnership, Student Civic Engagement, UCR Arts Block, STEM Education Center, Athletics, etc.

The City and University jointly advocate at the state level for projects that benefit the region. As such, it is important that both institutions share representation.

For continuity of representation and to maintain its longstanding partnership with the City of Riverside on housing and infrastructure, economic and workforce development it is imperative that UC Riverside be added to the AD 58-JRC map.

Thank you for your service to the residents of the state of California.

Sincerely,

(Your name)

Redistricting Frequently Asked Questions

What is Redistricting?

Following the United States federal census that takes place every ten years, California uses census data to redraw the Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, State Board of Equalization, and local municipality districts based on population changes.

Who redraws district lines?

The independent California Redistricting Commission (CCRC) uses the new census data to redraw Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and State Board of Equalization district boundaries. The CCRC will certify final district maps and deliver them to the Secretary of State no later than December 27, 2021. For more information on CCRC activities, see: www.wedrawthelinesca.org<http://www.wedrawthelinesca.org>

The boundaries for local municipalities (county supervisor, city council and school board districts) are drawn by those governing bodies and not by the CCRC. Information about the local process can be found at: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/california-redistricting
