Dear Colleagues,

I wish to bring some information to your attention this week.

Senate Highlights
Senate committees have begun their work this academic year and are in the process of reviewing proposals for new graduate programs, departments, and a series of information from the UC Office of the President and Systemwide Academic Senate Office.

Right now, I want to highlight that the report and proposal regarding changes to UCR's General Education standards and offerings is currently open for review and comment. This document, formulated by the hard work of a Senate ad hoc committee over the past 3 years, is seeking campus-wide consultative review through the Academic Senate standing and faculty executive committees. I encourage all Senate faculty to read the proposal and provide feedback so it can be further shaped. To that end, the deadline for formal feedback has been pushed to December. So, please find the document here and send your comments to your respective Faculty Executive Committee soon: Report and Proposal of the Senate Ad Hoc General Education Review Committee including Supplemental Reports 1, 2, and 3<https://ucr-senate-public.s3.amazonaws.com/issues/fullgenedrevreportandsupplementrpts6-21-21-6151f8b299315-.pdf>.

To continue the momentum of this important effort, the Academic Senate has initiated the constitution of a standing General Education Committee to receive this feedback and address changes to the proposal as necessary. A final version will have opportunity for additional consultation by the faculty before it would be presented to the Division for a vote.

Announcements and Information
Professor David Lloyd has sent along this announcement.

In collaboration with initiatives at the other UC campuses, UC Riverside is launching a fundraising campaign to help support the hosting at UCR of scholars at risk from Afghanistan. As you know, the situation for scholars and teachers in Afghanistan is especially precarious and many are seeking to leave the country. Our aim is not only to offer them a place of refuge, but also to enable them to continue their research and teaching insofar as possible. We are working with two national organizations, Scholars at Risk program<https://www.scholarsatrisk.org/> and the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund<https://www.scholarrescuefund.org/>, with which UCR has an existing relationship, to identify and place scholars who have been obliged to leave Afghanistan.

Please consider contributing generously to this urgent fundraising effort which Provost Elizabeth Watkins has generously offered to match up to $100,000.

Your donations are fully tax-deductible. Thank you for donating.
If you have any questions about this initiative or the UCR Scholars at Risk program, including questions about how to host a scholar in your department or laboratory, please feel free to contact David Lloyd, Professor of English, at this email: dclloyd at ucr.edu<mailto:dclloyd at ucr.edu>

Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Professor Dan Jeske has created a podcast called "Listening to UCR<https://www.spreaker.com/show/listening-to-ucr>" which is a series of interviews with faculty. It provides some interesting ways to learn more about different corners of the campus and get to know more of our colleagues in an in-depth way. The podcast is available at https://www.spreaker.com/show/listening-to-ucr .

Thanks for your time and as always, I appreciate my faculty colleagues' commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Fiat Lux,
Jason
