Statement of Support for our Asian and Pacific Islander community

Dear Colleagues -

I write on behalf of the faculty Senate to denounce and reject the recent instances of racist and violent attacks against Asian and Pacific Islander community members. Our campus and our community is a place where all of us deserve respect, a right to belong, and safety for themselves and their families.

These crimes are terrible, hateful acts, and are not a new phenomenon and have been a part of society for too long. I ask that we take time to consider how the cycles of fear and bias impact our colleagues, staff and students. Change only comes when we speak up against injustice, ignorance, and racialized violence with all our voices and our actions when it happens to any members of our UCR community and beyond.

Chancellor's letter from Feb 19:

Dear Campus Community,

We unequivocally condemn the recent violent and racist attacks in the Bay Area and nationally against Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders.

Since the outset of the pandemic, violent attacks, and hate incidents toward Asians and Pacific Islanders have increased - including troubling incidents on our own campus. While these particular attacks may have made state and national headlines and have been stoked by anti-Chinese rhetoric during the pandemic crisis, they are emblematic of longstanding discrimination toward the Asian and Pacific Islander community since the building of the US transcontinental railroad and global imperial wars before that. And all are unacceptable.

This conduct has no place at UC Riverside, does not reflect our values, and will not be tolerated.

We pledge our full solidarity with the Asian/American and Pacific Islander community on campus and beyond and support the efforts by student organizations; our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office; and faculty and staff to address violence and discrimination against Asian/Americans and Pacific Islanders.

It has been such an overwhelming year and we recognize many members of our community are tired of the seemingly unending challenges and obstacles being faced.
