*A brief introduction to Beronda Montgomery.*
Dr. Beronda Montgomery is a leader in mentoring, academic leadership, and
equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as being a prominent plant
biochemist. She is currently the Vice *President* for Academic Affairs and
*the *Dean of Grinnell College. Dr. Montgomery’s perspectives on mentoring
and leadership have helped form the foundations of the ARA Faculty
Mentoring Program within CNAS. Dr. Montgomery is a plant biochemist,
writer, and scholar who focuses on how individuals perceive, respond to,
and are impacted by the environments in which they exist; this theme unites
her research with her efforts for systemic change in mentoring and
leadership. Her 2021 book *Lessons from Plants* creatively joins the
principles of plant responses and adaptations to their environments with
best practices for mentoring and creating an equitable, diverse and
inclusive university environment.
Dr. Montgomery sports a wide variety of awards. Three of her most recent
awards are:
- 2025 recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science,
Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) (Jan 13, 2025).
- 2024 recipient of the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award from
the American Society of Plant Biologists.
- 2022 recipient of the Adolph E. Gude Award from the American Society
