The Bonnie Reiss Leading on Climate Student Fellowship program engages and
energizes students in support of UC’s climate action and sustainable food
goals. The fellowship program is funded by the UC President’s Global
Climate Leadership Council (GCLC) in support of the UC President’s Leading
on Climate priority. The goals of the fellowship program are to actively
engage students in:

● Shaping the university’s climate action programs and supporting the
university’s aggressive goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while
creating a more equitable, sustainable, resilient and healthy world.
● Conducting projects that support sustainable agricultural practices and
helping campuses and health systems work toward President Drake’s goal of
“defining the actions and resources needed to procure at least 25 percent
of our own food supplies from sustainable sources by 2025.

UCR welcomes applications for each of the following fellowships:

1) The *Climate Action Student Engagement Fellow* will work with the UCR
Office of Sustainability <https://sustainability.ucr.edu/> to support
efforts to engage students in support of UCR's climate action goals. They
will develop and disseminate educational materials to build
community awareness and generate support for climate action-related
projects. The Climate Action Engagement Fellow also will play an important
role in communicating student opinions on UC’s climate policy, programs,
and actions to university leadership.

2) The *Planning (Climate Action Planning or Resilience) Fellow* will work
with the Office of Sustainability and the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan
<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2025/05/20/ucr-launches-climate-plan-process>process
to work on a project that will support the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan
drafting and implementation.

3) The *Decarbonization Fellow* will work with the Office of Sustainability
on a project that supports the development and implementation of the UCR
Campus Decarbonization Study
<https://sustainability.ucr.edu/ucr-campus-decarbonization-study>.

4) The *Food Recovery Fellow* will work with the UCR Basic Needs Department

at UC Riverside. The fellow will oversee and maintain food donation bins;
host one educational workshop or event per academic quarter; track and

5) The *Food Procurement Fellow* will work with Dining Services
<https://dining.ucr.edu/ucr-dining-services-sustainability> procurement and

increasing sustainable and plant-based food procurement and eliminating
single use plastics. They will work on projects to align definitions and
reporting of sustainable and plant-based food procurement; conduct data
collection and analysis of current institutional food procurement; or

suppliers to meet the UC’s sustainable food procurement goal, and how it
may impact menu planning.

6) The *Sustainable Food and Agriculture Student Engagement Fellow* will
support efforts to engage the UCR community on the environmental and health
benefits of sustainable and plant-based foods. They will develop and
disseminate educational materials to build community awareness of the
environmental and health benefits of choosing sustainable and plant-based
foods, and build awareness of the efforts and projects happening at UCR to
reduce food waste and promote sustainable and plant-based foods. They will
gather community input, suggestions, issues, and opportunities about UCR’s
programs and approaches to promoting sustainable agriculture and food.

Fellowships are open to all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless
of immigration status. Students must be enrolled at UCR for the entire
2025-2026 academic year.

Fellows will be connected to a mentor in a UCR unit relevant to their
project (UCR Office of Sustainability, Basic Needs Department, Dining
Services, Human Resources or the R'Garden). Fellows are advised to work
with their mentor to develop a work plan that includes their project goals,
deliverables, timelines, and the metrics for measuring success. Fellows
should meet regularly with their project mentor to discuss projects,
progress and issues.

Student fellows are requested to attend the following systemwide events:
● A virtual orientation in mid-September 2025.

● Quarterly Fellows meetings and topical trainings hosted throughout the
year.

● Additional activities such as conference calls, Global Climate Leadership
Council meetings and trainings or cohort building activities.

Fellows will be asked to submit progress reports and a final evaluation,
including the metrics used to evaluate their project’s impact. Fellows will
develop an end-of-year poster outlining their projects. Additionally,
fellows will be encouraged to share and submit any tools, training, data
sets and other deliverables developed in the process of their fellowship.

The UCR Leading on Climate fellowships are administered by the Department
of Society, Environment and Health Equity (SEHE). Questions about the
specifics of your projects should be directed to SEHE Department Chair Dana
Simmons (dana.simmons at ucr.edu).
