Good afternoon,

There has been some confusion about the different 29X courses, so I am sharing information that will hopefully clarify the appropriate uses.

290 Directed Studies courses are intended to provide opportunities for qualified students to undertake advanced work in a topic appropriate to the student's special interests and needs. Directed Studies allow students to study topics that are not covered in a regularly offered course on campus.

· Research and creative activities intended for publication/performance/etc. are classified under 297 or 299.

· Studying for exams falls under 291.

· The 290 should not be used for 100-level work.

All 290 course enrollments require the submission of the 290 petition through R'Grad. Please use the link below to submit a petition for each term you enroll in a 290 course. The petition requires the submission of a detailed syllabus outlining a week by week table of readings, assignments (if applicable) and a final project in the form of a paper, presentation, or other format decided on between the instructor and the student.

For direct access to the petition form, please use the link below:

290 Petition
(Petition for Directed Studies)

Directed study (not research; research = units of 297 or 299)
Access via R'Grad which can be found in your R'web menu (http://rweb.ucr.edu)<http://rweb.ucr.edu/>

Please contact your GSAC Student Services Advisor if you have questions or want to discuss a specific situation. I am also happy to be of assistance.
