I hope you are all doing very well! My name is Jeffrey Villalobos, I am the ASUCR Commissioner of Basic Needs and a student employee in the Basic Needs Department. I am reaching out to you about an exciting Volunteer opportunity that I'd appreciate if you shared with your students!

ASUCR Internal Affairs is collaborating with UCR Dining Services and UCR Basic Needs to re-launch a food insecurity fighting program known as Swipe out Hunger. This program will allow students who are meal plan holders to donate leftover meal swipes during Week 10 to the Basic Needs department which will be converted into meal swipes/dining dollar cards that will then be given to students experiencing food insecurity via our Emergency Crisis Response Team and Emergency Housing programs.

For this program to be a success, we need your help! We need student volunteers to table in front of the Lothian and Glasgow dining halls during Week 10 (June 5-9) to encourage meal plan holders to donate some of their leftover meal swipes. Students will also be able to donate remotely via a google form link, but volunteers will help spread the word at the dining halls and get people to donate through that google form on the spot, as well as help distribute promotional items. This is where I hope your students will be able to come in and volunteer some of their time to help make Swipe Out Hunger a success!

Dear CAMP Students and prospective CAMP Scholars,

I encourage you to apply to the 2023 CAMP Summer Scholars Program. Current UCR STEM students who are currently in a research lab and meet CAMP Eligibility criteria (see below) may receive funding up to $5000 working Full Time 40 hours per week in a faculty-mentored research lab.

Background:

The California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) is part of a UC System-wide alliance and is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in the Sciences (LSAMP).

The CAMP Program at UC Riverside aims to recruit and retain students in STEM majors, facilitate their academic success, provide professional development, and encourage their transition to graduate study. Particular emphasis is placed on evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, and relevant research and educational experiences in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islanders. Faculty-mentored research experiences play a large role in the program and CAMP Scholars actively participate in research during the summer and throughout the academic year.

CAMP Eligibility:

  *   Be currently accepted to do full time (40 hours/wk) research in a UCR STEM faculty lab during the summer period 6/26 to 9/1

  *   Be African American, Chicano, Latino, Native American, or Pacific Islander (Pacific peoples from Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Cook Islands, other islands in Polynesia)

  *   Be a UC Riverside undergraduate student in good academic standing

  *   Have a minimum 2.7 UC cumulative GPA

  *   Be a declared STEM major

  *   Be a US Citizen or permanent resident

  *   Intend to pursue a Masters (M.S./M.A./MPH) or Ph.D. in a STEM field after graduation
*Students who have transferred from a community college are especially encouraged to apply
