Our 46th fellowship year
September 2025
I write to you during the opening week of our 46th academic year as we
welcome over 20 new fellows, orienting them to the Center and the vast
resources of the National Gallery of Art. We are navigating library stacks,
touring conservation labs, distributing badges, and looking forward to
hearing more about their research projects in the coming weeks.
As always, we continue to look ahead: You can apply for a 2026 Center
fellowship today. The application deadlines are listed below and on our
website

on October 16, with presentations by Stephen Marr (Malmö University),
Blessing Mary Ocheido (Platinum Interventions Care Initiative), Mathias
Agbo Jr. (Abuja, Nigeria), and Joan Razafimaharo (Antananarivo,
Madagascar), and a moderated discussion by Adedoyin Teriba (Dartmouth
College). It promises to be a fascinating discussion spanning multiple
continents.
For those who might not already be aware, Steven Nelson retired

as dean in July. His commitment to the democratization of knowledge, his
evenhanded leadership, and his ready laugh are greatly missed by all. We
celebrate Steven’s legacy in the success of the internship program he
organized with Howard University, his participation in the exhibition and
programming related to *Afro-Atlantic Histories

*(2022), and the publication of *Black Modernisms in the Transatlantic
World

*(2023), among other accomplishments.
We remain committed to highlighting the exceptional accomplishments of our
alumni, as you’ll see in our feature on Isabella Lores-Chavez below. We
welcome everyone from the greater Center community to share publications
and other professional updates through our alumni form

Center alumni: Isabella Lores-Chavez
Samuel H. Kress Fellow, 2020–2022
*What are you up to, and where is your work headed this year?*
As associate curator of European paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San
Francisco, I’ve been fortunate to participate in the Legion of Honor’s
centennial celebration. I curated a collection-based exhibition
<https://nga.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e894a1837aca4526f7e8a11b3&id=8ed6b079a7&e=2c3a36db93>
about the museum’s history (on view until January 4) and gave a lecture on
the museum’s 100th birthday.
In addition to my ongoing research on our Dutch and Flemish paintings, I
delivered a lecture
<https://nga.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e894a1837aca4526f7e8a11b3&id=f33118ef2c&e=2c3a36db93>
in April (part of our curatorial series “A Closer Look”) and launched a new
public program, *Arte en español*, for which I give free public talks in
Spanish in the galleries. At the moment, I’m celebrating the recent
publication of my book *Plaster Casts in the Life and Art of
Seventeenth-Century Dutch Painters: Absence and Presence*
<https://nga.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e894a1837aca4526f7e8a11b3&id=4b01c2b415&e=2c3a36db93>,
based on my doctoral dissertation. And I’m looking forward to participating
in the Museum NextGen program
<https://nga.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e894a1837aca4526f7e8a11b3&id=0fb7003486&e=2c3a36db93>
organized by the Villa Albertine and the FRench American Museum Exchange
(FRAME) in November.
*What connections or discoveries did you make during your time at the
Center that impact your work today?*
Above all, I cherish the intellectual community and supportive friendships
that I found at the Center. I often miss the feeling of listening to
brilliant people grapple with challenging concepts and thorny issues in
their research! Feedback and questions from senior scholars and my cohort
of predoctoral fellows inspired me to write what ultimately became my
favorite chapter of my dissertation. It transformed into a phenomenological
exploration of the act of drawing in the presence of a plaster cast, and it
became the opening chapter of my book. I’m also still thinking about
probing conversations I had with a group I convened with Christopher J.
Nygren (Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellow, 2021–2022). We discussed how we as
art historians can find alternatives to the written record to tell stories
about the sorts of individuals who, for a number of reasons, are
underrepresented in the archive.
