Dear graduate students (and advisors),
Once again, the Getty Research Institute has invited our department to
nominate one student to present their research at the 2027 Getty Graduate
Symposium.
This year the conference will take place on Thursday February 18, and
Friday February 19. (the weekend AFTER CAA) As in past years, programming
is spread out over two days, with a faculty roundtable on Thursday
afternoon, a dinner for students and advisors Thursday evening, and
symposium on Friday.
If you would like to be considered for this nomination, please consult with
your advisor. Typically, the department selects an ABD student at an
advanced stage in their research. (Unfortunately, repeat performances are
not allowed, so if you’ve already presented here, please don’t apply.) If
you decide to move forward, please email me (cc Iselda) right away to let
me know your plans. It's helpful to know how many applications we'll be
reviewing, since the candidate's name must be submitted to the GRI before
November 1st.
The application, due *Friday October 23 i*ncludes:
- Title
- Abstract (approximately 250 words)
- Academic bio (approximately 100 words)
The graduate committee will review applications and make a selection, which
must be submitted to the GRI before Nov. 1st.
For those who are new or unfamiliar with this event, starting in 2018, the
Getty Research Institute began hosting this symposium, which brings
together students and faculty from a selected group of Art History programs
in California. (See list below) Because each school may name a single
speaker, this event is also an opportunity for departments to showcase one
of our most promising emerging scholars. For students, it is a fantastic
chance to share your work, connect with peers in other programs, and meet
faculty and Getty-based scholars (who may review your future fellowship
applications). Moreover, conferences and symposia are always valuable
markers within the research and writing process because it allows one to
get feedback from a broader audience of specialists. Here is the link to
the website for the last Getty Graduate Symposium; one additional click
toward the bottom of the page will take you to the program:

Thank you,
Aleca
