Dear graduate students (and advisors),
This year’s Getty Graduate Symposium will take place on Friday 6
February 2024. Each year our department is privileged to name one student
to represent us by delivering a paper based on their current research. This
year, the event will take place at the Getty all-day on February 6, with a
catered dinner for speakers and advisors the night before on February 5.
Typically, the department selects an ABD student at an advanced stage in
their research. If you would like to be considered as the speaker from our
department, please: 1) confer with your primary advisor, and 2) send me
(with cc to Iselda) a prospective paper abstract (around 250 words, with
title) and short (100-word or less) academic bio by *Monday, October 27*.
Note: repeat performances are not allowed, so if you’ve already presented
here please don’t apply.
For those who are new or unfamiliar with this event, every year the Getty
Research Institute hosts this symposium which brings together students and
faculty from a selected group of Art History programs in California. (See
list below) As each school is allowed to name a single speaker, this event
is also an opportunity for departments to showcase the work of their most
promising students. For students, it is a fantastic chance to share your
work, connect with peers in other programs, as well as faculty and
Getty-based scholars (who very well may review your future fellowship
applications). Moreover, conferences and symposia are always valuable
markers within the research and writing process because it allows one to
get feedback from a broader audience of specialists. Here is the link to
the website for the last Getty Graduate Symposium; one additional click
