Colleagues, I hope your holiday break was restful and
enjoyable and that 2010 has been good to you so far! I am writing
to ask for your help in identifying extraordinary students who you
believe have the potential to be successful as the student regent.
A special invitation-only dinner for these students will be held on
<b>Friday, January 8, 2010</b>, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the Highlander Union
Building Room 268. The dinner will be a working dinner with the
regents to help students understand the student regent role to provide
tips on successfully navigating the application process. Please
forward names and contact information to me or Karin Schulze ASAP and we
will follow up with an invitation. <br><br>
Students at large also have an opportunity to meet with the student
regent and designate during their visit on Friday during on <b>open forum
that will be held between 4 -5 p.m. in HUB 268. </b> This forum is
intended to give students the opportunity to ask any questions they may
have of the regents, and to share concerns that they wish the regents to
take forward to the full board. Your help in alerting students to
the opportunity would be greatly appreciated. <br><br>
The position of student regent was first created in 1975. The student
regents provide the Board of Regents with a unique perspective. As
students, they bring an appreciation and understanding of the specific
needs and concerns of students. For over three decades, student regents
have represented the diversity of the UC student body and provided
insight during vital policy decisions. As one of 26 members of the Board
of Regents, the student regent represents the needs of one of the most
important stakeholder groups -- students -- as well as the interests of
the entire UC community and the people of California. The student regent
serves a two-year term, including the first year as a non-voting
"regent-designate" and the second year as a full voting member
of the board. Throughout their term, these regents attend all meetings
and serve as members of regental committees with full participation in
the regents' deliberations. <br><br>
The deadline for applying to become the 2011-12 student regent is
February 18, 2010. The position is open to undergraduate, graduate or
professional students on all UC campuses. The application form is
